"Everybody is identical in their secret unspoken belief that way deep down they are different from everyone else.”
I underlined this sentence a long time ago, as I was reading "Infinite Jest" by David Foster Wallace, and it has stayed with me ever since. Wallace matters a lot to me, his books matter; I do not even know exactly why for this collection, this season, I felt the urge to ask the photographer of Massimo Alba's new campaign to include a copy of "Infinite Jest" – the first American edition, the hardcover with that unforgettable blue sky on the cover – in some of the images.
Wallace is close to my heart because in his books - in his life - he asked all the right questions, and one in particular strikes me. What does it mean to live in our time? What’s the true meaning of loneliness in our media saturated world? How can we really welcome others in our lives? Wallace's words emerging from his books – not just "Infinite Jest" – are a consolation, and a constant source of wonder.
What does it mean to be different from others? Does it mean that we may be more like ourselves than someone else? And how about our clothes? Can they really make us different?
